A Quaker woman from Pennsylvania, she gained fame as an abolitionist and Republican Party lecturer during the Civil War era. Professor Gallman describes newspaper coverage of her talks as well as her later career as a novelist, playwright, and actor. This talk was part of a conference hosted by the University of Virginia’s Center for Civil War History. close
