Military and Public Service

The National Commission on Military, National, and Public Service (NCMNPS) held a hearing on potential policies to encourage or require military, national, and public service from all Americans. Panelists in this morning session of the event included representatives of a Jesuit service organization, the Boys and Girls Clubs of America, and a student service program at the University of Maryland. They talked about their experiences encouraging young people to engage in public service and answered questions from commissioners on ways to widen their success to a program that would be potentially national in scope.

In 2017, Congress created NCMNPS to review the selective service system and whether women should be required to register as all 18-25 year old males are required to do so. They also are charged with suggesting ways to create a universal expectation of national military, national or public service. The commission’s report was due in March 2020. close
