Acting Army Secretary John Whitley, National Guard Bureau Chief General Daniel Hokanson, and District of Columbia National Guard Commander Major General William Walker held a briefing at the Pentagon on the status of National Guard troops in Washington, D.C. The officials said 7,000 personnel would remain in the nation’s capital for the next several weeks and would be drawn down to about 5,000 troops by mid-March. They said the troops were remaining at the request of the U.S. Park Police, U.S. Secret Service, Capitol Police, and Metropolitan Police Department to assist with security, communications, medical evacuations, logistics, and safety support. close
