The nominees talked about their professional experience and how it prepared them to manage the coronavirus pandemi. Both nominees said managing the pandemic would be a priority if confirmed. They also spoke about addressing other public health issues such as the opioid crisis, mental health and depression, and underage drug use. During the hearing, Senator Rand Paul (R-KY) questioned Dr. Levine, who if confirmed would be the highest-ranking transgender public official in the U.S., about her thoughts on children undergoing medical treatment to change their gender, calling the treatment “genital mutilation.” Later, Chair Patty Murray (D-WA) warned members to be respectful of the witnesses during questioning.
