Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) spoke about the need to pass the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act, which would restore certain provisions of the original Voting Rights Act of 1965 that were altered by two recent U.S. Supreme Court rulings. Senator Schumer said he would allow Republicans to offer amendments if the legislation were to move forward with the support of 60 senators. In August, the House passed its own version of the bill on a party-line vote. close
