The Texas Senate heard opening arguments during the impeachment trial of state Attorney General Ken Paxton. “Mr. Paxton should be removed from office because he failed to protect the state, and instead, used the power of his elected office for his own benefit,” said Andrew Murr (R), Texas state representative and impeachment chair. Defense for the attorney general argued the prosecution lacks the evidence needed to prove guilt beyond a reasonable doubt, and the “whole case is a whole lot of nothing.” Attorney General Paxton, who at the time of this trial was suspended from office, was impeached in May 2023 by the state’s House of Representative over accusations of misconduct, including bribery and obstruction of justice. close
