In light of Iran’s long-standing support for Hamas, several Republican members grilled Mr. Lew about his work on the Iran nuclear deal when he was Treasury secretary in the Obama administration, alleging that he was not forthcoming about the deal’s financial implementation. Mr. Lew rejected those allegations, retorting that the deal was “transparent” and that it did not lift sanctions on terrorism, but involved Iran rolling back its nuclear program in exchange for the U.S. unfreezing holds on certain Iranian monies. The Trump administration later pulled out of the Iran deal in 2018. Moreover, some other members asked about Mr. Lew’s commitment to working with Israel in order to protect innocent Palestinians and civilians amid the ongoing war.
