Attorney General Merrick Garland and Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen announced enforcement actions against Binance, the largest cryptocurrency exchange in the world, and its founder and CEO Changpeng Zhao during a press conference from the Justice Department. Penalties announced against the company were more than $4.3 billion, the largest enforcement action in the Treasury Department’s history. According to Secretary Yellen, “Binance was allowing illicit actors to transact freely, supporting activities from child sexual abuse, to illegal narcotics, to terrorism, across more than 100,000 transactions.” Also delivering remarks were Deputy Attorney General Lisa Monaco and Commodity Futures Commission Chair Rostin Behman. close
