The House Judiciary Select Subcommittee on the Weaponization of the Federal Government held a hearing on federal law enforcement’s use of financial surveillance. The focus of the hearing was a new report issued by the committee examining how the FBI and other law enforcement agencies have used their authority to surveil the financial data of Americans in the wake of the January 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol. Republicans argued this surveillance infringes on the Fourth Amendment rights of Americans and allege conservative groups have been disproportionately targeted by surveillance of this type. Meanwhile, Democrats argued law enforcement has the authority for financial surveillance granted to them by law when there is a credible or criminal threat, and that Republicans are attempting to downplay the seriousness of the events of January 6. close
