SCOTUSblog Co-Founder Amy Howe talked about Supreme Court oral argument in Garland v. Cargill, a case argued in February 2024 that could affect gun policy and whether bump stocks that allow a firearm to operate more like a machine gun can be regulated. In 2018, the Trump administration enacted a bump stock ban in response to a 2017 mass shooting in Las Vegas during a music festival. The gunman used a bump stock with his rifle to kill 58 people and wounded more than 400 others. Shortly after the ban’s enactment, Michael Cargill, an owner of two bump stocks, filed suit. close
