Assistant Secretary of State for Arms Control Mallory Stewart discussed reports that Russia was developing a space-based nuclear weapon to destroy satellites. She said the U.S. was “extremely concerned” about this, though clarified that it was not an imminent threat. Ms. Stewart then spoke about Russia recently vetoing a United Nations Security Council resolution that called on countries to not deploy nuclear weapons in space--a provision already stated in the 1967 Outer Space Treaty. The resolution was sponsored by the U.S. and Japan; 13 countries voted for it, and China abstained. The Center for Strategic and International Studies hosted this fireside chat. close
