The first amendment, offered by Senator Lamar Alexander (R-TN), would have allowed for the importation of drugs from Canada, as well as changes to federal health programs. The amendment went down 49-49. An alternative amendmend, offered by Senators Bernie Sanders (I-VT) and Amy Klobuchar (D-MN), would also have allowed for the importation of drugs from Canada with a valid presicription. The amendment went down 46-52. It got the support of 12 Republicans, but lost the support of 13 Democrats.
