Senator Schumer to Wait to Speak to GOP Leader McCarthy Until After Speaker Election

Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer says he hasn't yet spoken with House GOP Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) about working together in the 118th Congress and will wait until he his election as speaker, if he is elected when lawmakers return for the new congressional session in January. Leader Schumer goes on to day that he has had preliminary talks with his Democratic counterpart in the House Representative Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) and that he believes the new Congress can be a productive one. However, he cautions Republicans against following former President Trump and his supporters if they want to be able to work together and get things done, saying, "Following MAGA is like Thelma and Louise--going over a cliff." close
