Following a period during which Ms. Parks was honored by lying in repose in the U.S. Capitol Rotunda, a memorial service was held to honor her life and legacy prior to her funeral scheduled in Detroit the following Wednesday. Participants paid tribute to Ms. Parks as a catalyst of the civil rights movement, her legacy as a voice for the black community, and her service to the nation in passionate speeches and with music. There were many standing ovations and shouts of “Amen!” Large pictures of Ms. Parks were carried through the aisles by young people. At the end audience members stood, held hands, and sang “We Shall Overcome” along with the choir. close
