Witnesses testified on State Department involvement before, during, and after the attack on the U.S. Consulate in Benghazi, Libya on September 11-12, 2013. Questions focused on departmental security operations and policies, and actions taken both in the wake of the attack and as a result of a report on the incident. There were some heated exchanges with former Ambassador Thomas Pickering and Admiral Mike Mullen of the State Department’s Accountability Review Board on Benghazi about the independence and completeness of their investigation. Mark Sullivan and Todd Kiel were members of the State Department’s Independent Panel on Best Practices that reviewed diplomatic security in the wake of the attack. close
