The case concerns whether the use of the drug midazolam in lethal injection executions violates the Eighth Amendment’s ban on cruel and unusual punishment. The case was brought by Oklahoma death-row inmates who allege that the sedative called midazolam, the first drug of the three-drug protocol, does not work as intended, resulting in extremely painful death.
