First Minister Nicola Sturgeon talked about the United Kingdom’s (U.K.) parliamentary election and the future of Scotland. The Scottish National Party (SNP) gained 50 seats in the election, giving it 56 of 59 seats allotted to Scotland in the House of Commons.

She told the audience that the U.S. would have nothing to fear if Scotland were to ever became an independent nation. She also discussed relations with the U.K. since the election and the implications for Scotland if the U.K. breaks away from the European Union, a referendum that would be put to vote before 2017.
