House members passed a bill unanimously (385-0) to let female World War II Women Airforce Service Pilots (WASPS) be interred in Arlington Cemetery. A law passed in 1977 allows women who served active duty to be buried in veterans' cemeteries, but Arlington National Cemetery is operated by the Defense Department, not the Veterans Department, and a new law was needed. The Defense Department maintained that it had limited space and the definition of those allowed shouldn’t be expanded. close
