“Beat Generation” writer Jack Kerouac lived in San Luis Obispo in 1953, working as a brakeman for the railroad. His time spent in this Central Coast community is highlighted in the exhibit, “Going Against the Grain” at the History Center of San Luis Obispo County. Pete Kelley, chair of the exhibits committee, talked about individuals in the county who were part of the arts and cultural movement.

C-SPAN’s Local Content Vehicles (LCVs) made a stop in their “2019 LCV Cities Tour” in San Luis Obispo, California, from March 2-6, 2019, to feature the history and literary life of the community. Working with the Charter cable local affiliate, they visited literary and historic sites where local historians, authors, and civic leaders were interviewed. The history segments air on American History TV (AHTV) on C-SPAN3 and the literary events/non-fiction author segments air on Book TV on C-SPAN2. close
