Also, Loyola University law professor Andrea Armstrong discussed data about prison deaths, and the Department of Justice’s Maureen Henneberg and the U.S. Government Accountability Office’s Gretta Goodwin discussed what the DOJ is doing to improve accurate reporting of prison deaths and enforcement of the Death in Custody Reporting Act (DCRA). The subcommittee’s 10-month investigation revealed that in 2021 the DOJ failed to identify about 990 deaths in custody. “There is an ongoing humanitarian crisis in U.S. prisons and jails.
