During a news conference following the weekly Senate Democratic caucus luncheon, Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) praised the Senate’s recently-passed bipartisan bill to keep the government open until November 17, but criticized the leadership of House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA), whom he said was beholden to House Republican “extremists” on the matter. In regard to Senator Bob Menendez’s (D-NJ) indictment for bribery, he said he was “deeply disappointed” and “disturbed,” saying the allegations fell way below the standards expected of a senator, but refused to say whether the senator should resign. Senator Menendez was expected to address the Democratic caucus the following day. close
