Former U.S. Central Command Commander retired Gen. Kenneth McKenzie, who oversaw the 2021 U.S. Afghanistan withdrawal, told House Foreign Affairs Committee members: “I alone bear full military responsibility for what happened at Abbey Gate.” The retired general was referring to a suicide bomb attack that killed 13 U.S. servicemembers as they helped with evacuations at Hamid Karzai International Airport in August of 2021. Retired Gen. Mark Milley, who served as Joint Chiefs of Staff chair in 2021, also gave his assessment of the withdrawal plan and the lessons learned. Other topics discussed included the rules of engagement and the State Department’s role in evacuations. close
