Nathaniel Philbrick talked about his book Mayflower: A Story of Courage, Community, and War, published by Viking. He read from his book and talked about the history of Plymouth Colony, founded in the west of present-day Massachusetts in 1620. Mr. Philbrick detailed the complex relationship between the English settlers and the Wampanaog Indians, describing the first Thanksgiving celebration and the early years in New England as peaceful. He explained that over 50 years after the Pilgrims settled, the Indians waged war against them beginning with the burning of Springfield and King Philip’s War. After his presentation he responded to audience members' questions. close
