Military Base Closing Deliberations, Joint The 2005 Defense Base Closure and Realignment Commission began final deliberations before submitting its report to the president on September 8, 2005. Commissioners heard reports for staff members and considered several motions and amendments to Defense Department recommendations.
In the afternoon of the first day of the final hearings, motions focused of recommendations for joint cross services base closures. Mr. Van Saun and his analysts presented analyses of the seven joint cross service groups consisting of 71 recommendations and 438 discreet actions proposed. The seven groups of the Department of Defense are education and training, headquarters and support, industrial, intelligence, medical, supply and storage, and technical.
The Commission considered such issues as the creation of a net fire center of excellence, realignment of national geospatial intelligence activities, and relocation of sea vehicle development acquisition. Senator Thune spoke during the intermission about Ellsworth Air Force Base (SD).
Bases considered for realignment included Sierra Army Depot (CA), Rock Island Arsenal (IL), Watervliet Arsenal (NY), Ship Intermediate Maintenance Activity (Norfolk, VA), Naval Weapons Station Seal Beach (CA), Lima Tank Plant (OH), Lackland Air Force Base (San Antonio, TX), Detroit Arsenal (MI), Fort Huachuca (AZ), Marine Corps Base Albany (GA), Naval Support Activity (PA), Tinker Air Force Base (OK), Hill Air Force Base (UT), Robins Air Force Base (GA), Stone Arsenal (AL), and Wright-Patterson Air Force Base (OH).
Bases considered for closure included River Bank Army Ammunition Plant (CA), Kansas Army Ammunition Plant, Mississippi Army Ammunition Plant, Lone Star Army Ammunition Plant (TX), Newport Chemical Depot (IN), and Hawthorne Army Depot (NV). close
